How to Cook Lobsters

There are many different ways to cook lobsters, but the most common methods, with the most consistent results, are as follows:

Steaming lobsters - Steaming is the most common method of cooking live lobsters. It is done by placing two inches of salted water in a large pot and placing the lobsters in when the water is boiling. Cover the pot with a lid. Cook for 13 - 15 minutes after the water come to a boil again with the lobsters.

Boiling lobsters - You can also boil your lobsters. Fill a large pot with enough water to cover the lobsters. Add two tablespoons of salt to the water and then add the lobsters to the boiling water. Cover the pot with a lid. Cook for 14 - 17 minutes after the water once again comes to a boil.

How to tell when the lobsters are cooked: A lobster is cooked when the two front antennae pull out easily, when the meat is white, and when the outer shells are bright red. Never overcook your lobster. Overcooking tends to make the meat hard and rubbery.

The most humane way to cook a lobsters: According to the Gulf of Maine Aquarium, is by putting them in the freezer for a few minutes before placing them into the boiling water.
